Dr Christian Rowan

The presentation will focus on the work being done by the Federal Government and State LNP to address the Ice epidemic that is ravaging Australia. It will also include commentary from Dr Rowan as an Addiction Medicine Specialist.

The National Ice Action Strategy was agreed upon at the Council of Australian Governments meeting in December 2015. The Federal Government committed $298.2 million over four years from the 1st of July 2016 to reduce the impacts associated with drug and alcohol misuse to individuals, families and communities.

The implementation of NIAS aims to ensure that families and communities across Australia have better access to information, support and services to help them to respond to drug and alcohol issues.

NIAS provides a targeted approach to high-risk populations and the Federal Government has committed to early intervention and treatment services that are better able to respond to drug and alcohol related harms and are more suitable to meeting the needs of the populations they serve.

The Liberal National Party has a strong history of addressing drug use in Queensland, including measures such as supporting addiction treatment services that work, as well specific strategies to disrupt supply networks. These were implemented during the LNP’s previous term in Government in Queensland.

The LNP recruited almost 900 additional police officers on the frontline and implemented strong criminal law reforms. Taskforce Maxima sought to address the scourge of criminal gangs. The LNP provided $3.4 million for a Queensland Illicit Drug Diversion Initiative and $5.5 million targeted at helping at-risk population groups including young rural and remote Queenslanders.

The LNP in Queensland has a comprehensive response, based on the National Ice Action Strategy.
